History does not repeat itself, but rhymes is the title of the exhibition curated by Hélène de Franchis (Studio la Città, Verona) and Giorgia Lucchi Boccanera (Boccanera Gallery Trento/Milan). This exhibition project was created by two galleries that share the same vision and interest in promoting contemporary art.
“History does not repeat itself but it rhymes,” is probably the most well-known and quoted phrase of American writer Mark Twain. This famous quote represents the role of history itself: a constant evolution of transformations and progress, while at the same time, patterns that repeat and schemes that replicate paradigms similar to themselves. This sometimes happens even when two personal stories intersect. One relives the mechanisms of its past in the other, while the other builds a projection of its possible tomorrow.

JACOB HASHIMOTO

Noise

June 24th – November 11th, 2023
Opening: Saturday, June 24th, 2023, 11 a.m.

Jacob Hashimoto’s solo show at Studio la Città presents for the first time an entire collection of 34 works on canvas.
Therefore, it will not be monochrome kites that engaging the gallery space, or colored kites mounted in wall pieces.
This time Hashimoto works only on the canvas, his work is pure paint on canvas.

While Hashimoto has previously used oil and acrylic paints on canvas to explore tangents in his work, asides and inspirations, these latest explorations in painting are more substantively an extension of the body of work for which he is best known. They strip the work of its charactaristic technique and leaves the essential gestures and motifs – the foundations of Hashimoto’s musings. The signature characteristics of his broader output are still recognizable: here, the essential architectures undergirding his kite-based work now translate to the color fields and layered paint marks appearing on these medium-sized canvases. Alongside these chromatic abstractions, a new series of paintings employing a muted, largely black and white palette will hang in a row on the longest wall of the gallery.

MASSIMILIANO GATTI

Firaq… nostalgia

September 23rd – October 28th, 2023
Opening: Saturday, September 23rd, 2023, 11 a.m.

Studio la Città presents the solo exhibition of Massimiliano Gatti with exhibition texts by Cesare Pomarici entitled Firaq…nostalgia.
The evocative title encapsulates the meaning of a series photographs, Firaq, a video of the same name directed by Massimo Leonardi, a second cycle of works entitled Anche tu sei collina (You Are Also Hill), and three new neon works Tracce di viaggio (Traces of Travel). The Arabic word “Firaq” signifies a separation and at the same time refers to a kind of nostalgia born from that separation. “The images show plants that – like the human beings to whom they metaphorically visually represent – have roots uprooted from their land.”
