Art Basel, Miami
December 2 – December 5, 2004
At its best, an installation in a fair gives a taste, not just of the gallery’s forthcoming exhibitions, but also allows an annual view of the artists’ growth. Studio la Città has always kept this philosophy in mind and at this edition of Art Miami re-presents artists already seen in other fairs as well as newer names. Many of these artists will be seen again at the forthcoming show celebrating the gallery’s thirty-five years activity to be held in Verona this November and in May 2005. Particular attention will again be given to the latest work by Jacob Hashimoto, Herbert Hamak whose latest pieces once again demonstrate just how pure colour can change form and how light can bend both form and colour to its own ends when wedded to grades of transparency, Julia Mangold, Hiroyuki Masuyama whose recent works are even further enriched by the distant regions of memory. As in the tradition of Studio la Città, we will be showing a very carefully selected pair of ceramics as well as an unusual pink oval by Lucio Fontana, whose works are always present on the stands of the gallery sinca its opening in 1969. Studio la Città hopes that the perceptive visitor to Art Miami, will find the same sense of development and growth in the gallery’s choice of artists: Stuart Arends, Pierpaolo Calzolari, Luigi Carboni, Lawrence Carroll, Lucio Fontana, Herbert Hamak, Jacob Hashimoto, Haubitz+Zoche, Emil Lukas, Julia Mangold, Mirco Marchelli, Hiroyuki Masuyama, Florio Puenter, Ross Rudel, Ettore Spalletti… Most of these artists have been seen before and most will be presented again. The aim of the gallery as well, we believe, as that of the artists, is not consistency but constancy, an aim we might perhaps describe as quiet but unceasing innovation.
Art Cologne, Cologne
October 28 – November 1, 2004
At its best, an installation in a fair gives a taste, not just of the gallery’s forthcoming exhibitions, but also of those artists that interest it even though there may never be the possibility of giving them a show. It also allows an annual view of the artists’ growth. Studio la Città has always kept this philosophy in mind and at this edition of Art Cologne re-presents artists already seen here as well as newer names. Many of these artists will be seen again at the forthcoming Art Miami fair, and some of them will make another appearance in the context of the two-part show celebrating the gallery’s thirty-five years activity to be held in Verona this November and in May 2005. Particular attention will again be given to the latest work by Jacob Hashimoto. The three-dimensional aspect of his wallpieces has been compressed, but his colour now plays an active role in creating an illusionary space to subtly play its physical one. His ‘tree’ sculptures playfully allude to natural forms while abstractly containing space in a new way. Herbert Hamak’s latest pieces once again demonstrate just how pure colour can change form and how light can bend both form and colour to its own ends when wedded to grades of transparency. The visitor will also now note that Hiroyuki Masuyama’s recent works are even further enriched by the distant regions of memory. Studio la Città hopes that the perceptive visitor to Art Cologne, and later perhaps to Art Miami, will find the same sense of development and growth in the gallery’s choice of artists: Stuart Arends, Pierpaolo Calzolari, Luigi Carboni, Lawrence Carroll, Max Cole, Lucio Fontana, Herbert Hamak, Jacob Hashimoto, Haubitz+Zoche, Lena Liv, Emil Lukas, Julia Mangold, Mirco Marchelli, Hiroyuki Masuyama, Florio Puenter, Ross Rudel, Ettore Spalletti… Most of these artists have been seen before and most will be presented again. The aim of the gallery as well, we believe, as that of the artists, is not consistency but constancy, an aim we might perhaps describe as quiet but unceasing innovation.
Art Basel, Basel
June 16 – June 21, 2004
Studio la Città was founded in Verona in 1969 and exhibits the works of young artists as well as those now considered contemporary classics. It has never been concerned with divisions between abstract and figurative art but, rather, with artists who operate with a similar interior coherence. This policy will be to the fore again at this year’s edition of Art Basel. As usual, our stand will reflect both the past season and will foreshadow the exhibitions for the coming year. And so, as well as such classic artists as Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, John McCracken and Michelangelo Pistoletto, we will be showing works by Stuart Arends, Luigi Carboni, Lawrence Carroll, Herbert Hamak, Emil Lukas, Julia Mangold, Ross Rudel, Jonathan Seliger… As we try to do for every edition of Art Basel, this year too we will be presenting the work of an artist never previously shown in the gallery, Florio Puenter, and this will provide a foretaste of the wide-ranging exhibition of his photographs which we will be inaugurating in Verona next September. Furthermore, for this edition’s new event, Professional Day, to be held on Monday June 21st, we have invited the young art critic and associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum in Venice, Luca Massimo Barbero, to curate a groundbreaking installation by Hiroyuki Masuyama and Jacob Hashimoto. Although these artists will be familiar from our previous participation at the fair, this time they will be seen in a completely new light.
Arte Fiera, Bologna
January 22 – January 26, 2004
As always since 1975, Studio la Città is participating in this year’s edition of Arte Fiera, the Bologna Art Fair. It is now the fourth year that we have chosen to have a larger space in the Pavilion N. 31, to have the possibility of showing a wider and more complete presentation of each artist with installations and big sculptures. Among the artists that Studio la Città will be presenting are: Stuart Arends, Luigi Carboni, Lawrence Carroll, Max Cole, Giacomo Costa, Alberto Garutti, Herbert Hamak, Emil Lukas, Lena Liv, Julia Mangold, Mirco Marchelli, Hiroyuki Masuyama, Ross Rudel, Jonathan Seliger, David Simpson, Phil Sims e Sirio Tommasoli. We will be showing a new large work by Jacob Hashimoto and for the first time an installation by Steve Roden. As usual in the program of the gallery we shall be presenting historical artists such as Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Mario Merz.
