HEMA UPADHYAY
Princess’rusted Belt #1
Hema Upadhyay was born in 1972 in Baroda, India. Drawing extensively from her personal experience, she created narratives from reclaimed materials to explore themes of gender, migration, socioeconomics, and urban development. “A lot of the chaos in my work actually comes from the city,” she explained. “When I work in my studio in Mumbai, there are many elements of decay, of life, of chaos. It’s a double-edged condition when you see the ongoing development: you see growth but also decay.” She continued to exhibit internationally, with solo shows – among many others – at the MACRO in Rome, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, and Nature Morte Gallery in New Delhi.
The narrative content of her works is expressed through an urban and reflective voice; often, the artist incorporates her own image into the photographs in her works to indicate her personal involvement in representing what she wants to communicate.
She passed away in Mumbai in 2015, a victim of a violent femicide planned and commissioned by her husband.
