HEMA UPADHYAY, The Princesses’ Rusted Belt

Hema Upadhyay was born in Baroda, India in 1972. She died in 2015 in Mumbai, India.
Her work has often dealt with issues of immigration to large cities, and is constantly linked to “urban chaos.” In her works, the artist speaks of the social and cultural changes that have affected most metropolitan cities in Mumbai, a megacity that is a destination for large masses of immigrants to India, and a newly built area of countless new neighborhoods, sites of stark contrasts in the sign of caste immutability.
