LUIGI VERONESI, silkscreen

Luigi Veronesi (28 May 1908 – 25 February 1998) was an Italian painter, photographer, director and set designer.

He participates in the first collective exhibition of abstract art in Italy, on 4 March 1934, in the studio of the painters Felice Casorati and Enrico Paolucci in Turin, with the artists Lucio Fontana, Virginio Ghiringhelli, Osvaldo Licini, Fausto Melotti, Mauro Reggiani and Atanasio Soldati, with them he signs the “Manifesto of the First Collective Exhibition of Italian Abstract Art”. In 1936 he takes part in the Triennale di Milano and in an exhibition of abstract art in Como with Lucio Fontana, Virginio Ghiringhelli, Osvaldo Licini, Alberto Magnelli, Fausto Melotti, Enrico Prampolini, Mario Radice, Mauro Reggiani, Manlio Rho.
In 1932, in Milan, the gallery Il Milione hosts his first creations, figurative style: later, he starts his personal research in the field of abstractionism; In Paris he meets F.Léger and he is interested in Russian and Dutch constructivism, abandoning the figurative structure of his early years and facing research in the field of geometric abstraction.
In 1934 he joins the Parisian group Abstraction-Création, knows the experiences of Swiss constructivism and adheres to the method of the Bauhaus: decisive is the “lesson” of Wassily Kandinsky. He participates in the exhibition Arte Astratta Arte Concreta at the Palazzo Reale in Milan.
Very active first in the theater and then in the cinema, he makes 6 experimental and abstract films, of which 4 completely lost, while of the others remain only short clips that can not be screened, (works dating back to the forties). In 1949 he joins the MAC – Movement for Concrete Art -, founded in Milan in 1948 by Atanasio Soldati, Gillo Dorfles, Bruno Munari, Gianni Monet, and participates in the exhibitions. He continues to be interested in music, creating a polydimensionality of art as a global project, deepening his research on the mathematical relationships of musical notes, translating them into the tonal relationships of color. It creates several chromatic transpositions of musical scores – at the end of the nineties, this research was developed by the musician Sergio Maltagliati. For his scientific research on color, chromatic perception and music, in the seventies (1973-77) he was assigned the Chair of Chromatology and Composition of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts.
He actively participates in most of the exhibitions of those years, such as the exhibition of Italian abstractionism at the XXXIII Venice Biennale, the Festival of Contemporary Music, a solo exhibition at the Spatia Gallery in Bolzano in 1980, and another in Pordenone in 1984. In 1983 he receives the Feltrinelli Prize of the Accademia dei Lincei for painting.
