PHIL SIMS, Umbrian Paintings

Phil Sims was born in 1940 in Richmond, California.
Before turning to painting, Sims worked as a potter and made ceramic works.
In the 1960s he enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute. Today, he is considered one of the greatest colorist painters internationally. At the beginning of his artistic training, he studied the use that the artists of Abstract Expressionism make of color, always keeping a look at the more traditional European painting.
Color has always been a central theme in Sims’ works, as can be seen from his painting technique. The final result is obtained by spreading various layers of paint, usually between forty and sixty, to cover the entire surface of the canvas with horizontal and vertical brush strokes.
